Otago Museum

Since 1868, Otago Museum has been sharing its world-class collection of over 1.5 million objects, telling stories of nature, culture and science from Otago, Aotearoa New Zealand and the world.

Eight free galleries showcase the fascinating and the unique, the biggest and the best. See the most comprehensive collection of articulated moa skeletons in Southern Land, Southern People, explore the treasures of early Māori in Tāngata Whenua, walk alongside a fin whale skeleton in Maritime and encounter an eight-member rat king in the Victorian-inspired Animal Attic.

Journey to the edge of the universe in the Perpetual Guardian Planetarium and explore the beautiful nature of science in the world's first laser-activated digital gallery.

Otago Museum is also host to a busy schedule of fun, family-friendly programmes and events running throughout the year including hands-on workshops, makerspace activities, live performances, science shows, gallery trails and more.

Otago Museum is proud to be the home of the Tūhura Science Centre, the largest interactive science centre in Aotearoa New Zealand. Tūhura is not only a science centre but includes a three-storey Tropical Forest, filled with an abundance of butterflies and tropical animals.

A three-storey indoor slide, a bike-riding skeleton, and 43 other hands-on interactives awaken wonder, curiosity, and reveal the science in everything that surrounds us.

Short on time but want to discover the heart of the collection? Touring the galleries with a Museum Guide is the best way to experience the rich offerings of the Otago Museum.
