Tuapeka Goldfields Museum

Make us your first stop for information on Lawrence and its golden history. Visit the fascinating museum. which contains relics from the days of the goldrush, such as gold pans and mud brick cottages that the goldminers lived in. Pick up the Lawrence District Heritage Trail pamphlet.

Our displays celebrate the discovery of gold by Gabriel Read in 1861 and the subsequent rush of miners to the Tuapeka district.
They explain the methods of gold recovery from pan to sluicing and dredging.
The once large Chinese community is recognised with its own room.
Featured are the history of schools, churches, clothing and social life after the initial excitement.
Travel difficulties to the area, the local industries and farming are also featured in the displays.
