Anthem House


This house situated at 17 Lancaster St was built in 1902 for J.J. Woods, the first person outside the U.K. to be awarded ‘freeman of the county’ and the first county clerk and treasurer for the Tuapeka County Council. J.J. Woods was the winner of a competition for setting music to the poem “God defend New Zealand” written by Thomas Bracken which became the National Anthem.
