The Clutha District - From the Catlins Coast to New Zealand's Earliest Goldfields
South from Dunedin along the Southern Scenic Route nestles the seaside fishing village of
Taieri Mouth and south of Dunedin on SH1 can be found the lakeside township of
Waihola offering boating, windsurfing and fishing. Nearby the
Sinclair Wetlands are home for some of New Zealand''s rarest birds.
Further South is
Milton, a town renowned for it''s woollen textiles, farming and forestry. This is an ideal stop before heading to
Balclutha and on down to
Owaka and the
Southern Scenic Route, or for those heading to Central Otago the turnoff is just south of Milton.
The early gold mining town of
Lawrence is just a short journey. North of Lawrence at Raes Junction is the turnoff to the west Otago township of Tapanui, nature''s playground and home of the Blue Mountains, the first and largest area to be gazetted as a recreational hunting area and is revered by deer and pig hunters from around the world. The Pomehaka River provides unequalled Trout and Salmon Fishing.
The Southern Scenic Route can be joined in Dunedin and followed through Clutha Country and the
Catlins to discover nature’s wonderland of native wildlife, spectacular scenery of native forests and
rocky coastlines. A must do when visiting Clutha Country and the Catlins!
